Why I Love Hillsong

First, let me say why I “don’t like Hillsong”:  their look, their sound, their extreme trendiness, their youthfulness, etc.  My love for Hillsong isn’t because they’re the “cool band to like”.  It goes much deeper than that.

I see many churches trying to get the look, the sound, the trend and the young faces of the Hillsong stage — hoping their success will soon follow.  And, of course, it doesn’t.

So…why do I love Hillsong?

1.  I love the way everyone on the stage is a worshipper.  Watch one of their many YouTube videos and you’ll see everyone on the stage worshipping.  When the drummer isn’t drumming, his head is bowed and his hands are raised.  When the guitar players aren’t strumming…the keyboard players aren’t playing…the singers aren’t singing — they’re all engaged in worship.  I love it!  They’re ALL worshippers.

2.  I love the way they’re raising up the next generation of leaders.  Darlene Zschech is one of the best singers and worship leaders out there today, and yet she has raised up others to take her place.  It’s in the fiber of the ministry.  Paul Baloche is the same — he’s been around for a while, and still he’s on the cutting edge of the worship world.  Why?  He’s a spiritual father, raising up spiritual sons and daughters.  For this, I applaud these leaders.  It takes a true leader to give up their spotlight, and yet when they do, God is always pleased.  The one who is willing to take the back seat will always be rewarded.  Always.

3.  I love the way they’re “trendy”.  What Hillsong did 20 years ago was selling then (and would probably still sell today), and yet they have changed with the culture…again…and again…and again.  Personally, I still love several of their older tunes, but my band doesn’t.  The Hillsong team are great examples to us that we can reach our culture, while holding to the extreme outspoken word of God and move of the Holy Spirit…while being “trendy”.

What are some things you like about Hillsong?
